The World's Largest Watercolor Pan — Handmade in Germany

The Skrim Giant Pan is the world's largest handmade watercolor pan. It weighs 980 grams (2.16 pounds) and measures 184 × 114 × 49 mm. Volume: 1,030 cm³ — exactly 317 times larger than a standard half-pan. Production location: Fellbach, Germany. Edition size: 1–5 numbered pieces. To our knowledge, no watercolor manufacturer has ever produced a functional pan at this scale.

How Big Is the World's Largest Watercolor Pan?

The Giant Pan contains 980 grams of artist-grade watercolor paint. A standard half-pan holds approximately 2.5 grams according to industry specifications from manufacturers like Schmincke and Winsor & Newton. The Giant Pan holds 392 times that amount by weight, and 317 times the volume.

This is not a display piece. The Giant Pan is a fully functional watercolor that activates with water like any standard pan. At this scale, a single pan contains more pigment than most artists use in a lifetime of painting.

For size comparison: the length equals a standard paperback book. The weight equals a liter of water. The surface area provides 70 times the working space of a half-pan.

The 980-gram weight is measured after full curing. Fresh pour weight exceeds 1,100 grams due to water content that evaporates during the 6-week drying period.

How Was the Giant Pan Made?

Production required 14 weeks of development before the first successful pour. The mold is  in rigid material, then converted to silicone for casting. Each pour is executed in controlled stages to prevent cracking — temperature and humidity must stay within 2% tolerance throughout the multi-week drying period.

We tested around pours before achieving a stable production process. Early attempts cracked during curing. Temperature variance of just 3°C caused visible stress fractures. The final method uses staged pours with 48-hour intervals between layers.

Drying time per piece: 6 weeks minimum. Total production time from mold preparation to final quality check: 8–10 weeks per Giant Pan.

Why Golden Key?

The Giant Pan features Golden Key, a warm luminous gold with exceptional depth and light reflection. This color was selected specifically for the Giant Pan project.

Golden Key contains interference pigments that shift between gold and warm copper depending on viewing angle. At 980 grams, the surface becomes sculptural — catching and reflecting light across 210 cm² of color. The visual effect at this scale cannot be replicated in standard pan sizes.

Golden Key is also available as a standard half-pan for artists who want to test the color before committing to the collector edition.

What Does "Made in Germany" Actually Mean?

"Made in Germany" is often used loosely. For the Giant Pan, it means complete vertical integration:

Formulation: The watercolor recipe was developed in-house over 3+ years of testing. No white-label formulas.

Mold Production: The 3D-printed mold was designed and printed on-site. The silicone conversion happened in the same facility.

Pouring: Each Giant Pan is poured by hand in Fellbach, Germany. No contract manufacturing.

Quality Control: Every step — from pigment selection to final packaging — happens under one roof. A single team handles the entire process.

Drying and Curing: The 6-week drying period occurs in climate-controlled conditions on-site. Temperature and humidity are logged daily.

The Giant Pan represents 8–10 weeks of continuous attention per piece. This is not scalable production. Each pan is essentially a custom project.

Limited Edition Details

The Giant Pan is strictly limited to 1–5 pieces total. This is not artificial scarcity — production complexity makes larger runs impractical.

Each Giant Pan includes:

  • Individual numbering (1/5, 2/5, etc.) hand-engraved on the pan
  • Signature from the production team
  • Certificate of authenticity with production date and specifications
  • Premium presentation packaging designed for the Giant Pan dimensions
  • Care documentation for long-term storage and use

When the 1–5 pieces are sold, no additional Giant Pans will be produced in this color or format. The mold will be archived.
